Whether you're driving a car or a truck, an SUV or a van, your vehicle has two types of air filters -- one for its engine, and one for its cabin. They vary in shape, from panel to circular and cylindrical, and their fibers are usually made of pleated synthetic paper, foam, cotton, or metal.
What both do is straightforward: they capture airborne contaminants. The engine air filter keeps them out of the air intake, and therefore, out of your motor, while the cabin air filter captures them before they can get into your heater and air conditioning.
Unfortunately, those pollutants can accumulate in both filters and restrict airflow through them -- that is, if the filters don't otherwise degrade from use and age. When either happens, engine and HVAC problems follow. Naturally, then, the best way is to tell if your car air filters need replacing is to look for their signs. They include:
- A lit Check Engine light on your dash
- Dirty, clogged, or worn filters
- Abnormal engine noises
- Engine power loss
- A misfiring engine
- Weak throttle response and acceleration
- Worsening gas mileage
- Increased exhaust emissions (black smoke)
- Unclean odors in your cabin
If you see any such symptoms, change your air filters ASAP. Otherwise, they'll need to be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or so, which is about once a year -- no more than every 30,000 miles at most. There are benefits to doing that sooner: normal fuel efficiency and emissions levels and an engine that lasts longer.
